Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis

What is the Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis?

The Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is a prenatal diagnostic method performed on the embryo, before it is transferred to the uterus, to determine whether it has a chromosome abnormality or genetic disorder. Once the study has been conducted, only healthy embryos will be selected for transfer.

This is a complex process which may be carried out in the many cases permitted by Spanish law. This law regulates the hereditary diseases and/or circumstances for which we can perform the Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis.

Indications for the Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis

PGD is indicated when the embryos are at risk for having serious chromosome abnormalities or a mutation in the gene involved in a hereditary genetic disease. PGD would also be indicated when there are serious doubts regarding embryo viability due to previous history.

If you require a Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis to prevent the transmission of hereditary genetic conditions to your children, contact us and explain your case to us. Our international department, in coordination with the personnel responsible for PGD at URE, will answer your questions and explain the process to you.

PGD is currently quite useful in cases of advanced maternal age. If you are 38 or older or have a history of recurrent miscarriage, you can undergo this treatment.
