What is In Vitro Fertilisation?

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is an assisted reproduction treatment which involves extracting or retrieving oocytes in order to join them with spermatozoids in the laboratory. Once the oocytes have been fertilised, a limited number of the resulting embryos are transferred to the woman’s uterus so that they can continue developing naturally there.

In Vitro Fertilisation may require the use of donor sperm. The sperm donor shall always be anonymous, in accordance with Spanish legislation, and must have passed all necessary screenings, examinations and genetics tests.

Stages of In Vitro Fertilisation

IVF treatment is divided into three stages: ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval and embryo culture, and the embryo transfer. Each stage is explained in detail below.

Ovarian Stimulation

The first stage of In Vitro Fertilisation begins with hormone treatment to ensure the development of several follicles by administering medication.

This stage normally lasts between 10 and 12 days and is monitored with ultrasound scans and hormone analyses which can be done at our clinic or at a specialised centre in your country.

Egg Retrieval and Embryo Culture

The follicle aspiration is the moment when the eggs are retrieved. You will need to be in Malaga at least 3 days before this step.

Next, the eggs are inseminated with the spermatozoids and the embryos are kept in conventional or time-lapse incubators for 3 to 6 days. During this stage you will be in direct contact with laboratory personnel monitoring your case who will keep you informed throughout the process.

Embryo Transfer

The embryo transfer involves depositing the best embryos inside the uterine cavity. This stage also requires your presence in Malaga, but 24 hours later you can return home to your country.

You may take a pregnancy test 16 days after egg retrieval. You can take the test in your country and then send us the result; after this we will give you further instructions.
