Common doubts before donating eggs

Doubts before donating eggs are completely normal. Many women want to help others by becoming egg donors but hesitate due to uncertainty, fears, or misinformation.

At URE Centro Gutenberg, as in any fertility clinic, certain requirements must be met to become a donor. Our egg donors are healthy women aged between 18 and 33, who are studying or working and want to help others achieve their dream of motherhood.

Because we know there are many myths and questions around egg donation, we want to address the most common doubts before donating eggs.

Will I Become Infertile If I Donate My Eggs?

Absolutely not. Donating eggs doesn’t reduce your fertility or deplete your ovarian reserve. During the process, we stimulate your ovaries to mature follicles that would otherwise naturally fade and be lost. So rather than harming your fertility, we’re making use of eggs that wouldn’t have been used anyway.

Can I Donate If I’m on Birth Control or Have Had Tubal Ligation?

Yes. You can donate even if you’re taking the pill, although you’ll need to stop temporarily during the treatment. If you have a hormonal IUD, it must be removed. Tubal ligation does not affect your eligibility to donate.

Can I Donate If I Already Have Children?

Yes. Spanish law allows egg donation provided there are no more than six children born from the same donor in Spain. This includes both your biological children and those born via donation.

Will I Know the Recipient or Baby?

No. Egg donation in Spain is strictly anonymous. Neither you nor the recipient will ever know each other’s identities, nor that of any children born from your donation.

How Many Times Can I Donate?

You can donate as many times as you’d like—as long as the limit of six children born in Spain has not been reached. Even if this number hasn’t been met, donation must stop if there are frozen embryos that could still lead to births. Fertility clinics like ours track this closely.

How Long Does the Egg Donation Process Take?

After being accepted as a donor, you’ll start hormonal medication with your next period. You’ll visit the clinic every 2–3 days for monitoring. The process lasts about 10–14 days. After the egg retrieval and your next period, we’ll schedule a check-up to ensure everything is fine.

Can I Have Sex During the Treatment?

We strongly advise against sexual intercourse from the start of the hormone treatment until after your first period post-retrieval, to prevent risks such as ovarian torsion or multiple pregnancy.
