Consistency in fertility: your best ally

Here’s a statistic: 85% of women who come to URE Centro Gutenberg achieve pregnancy through artificial insemination or in vitro fertilisation treatments. Every day, we see that (consistency in fertility) thanks to assisted reproduction treatments is the best way to achieve the goal of pregnancy.
It is estimated that approximately 25% of couples abandon fertility treatments after failing on their first attempt, due to factors such as stress, fear or the cost of such treatments. Abandonment is a cause of infertility, and therefore our job is to fight against it and encourage patients, within their means, to achieve their goal of having children.
Assisted reproduction and the possibility of pregnancy
In assisted reproduction, the chances of pregnancy are individual to each couple, depending on age, cause and technique used. When pregnancy is not achieved on the first attempt, it is preferable, if the woman or couple so wishes, to take some time out, rest, but not abandon the path already started.
We have conducted a study of patients under the age of 40 who have been treated at the URE Centro Gutenberg, specifically 739 women. After undergoing a complete fertility study, assessment and medical diagnosis, the patients began treatment with artificial insemination using their partner’s or spouse’s semen. Artificial insemination is a simple, minimally invasive technique with few complications for the woman, which involves introducing sperm into the uterus in the days around ovulation.
Of the total number of couples studied, 221 achieved pregnancy after one or more attempts (usually no more than three) at artificial insemination. Unfortunately, the rest did not succeed.
Keeping trying is key to achieving pregnancy
Focusing on the couples who did not achieve pregnancy, in reproductive medicine we know that they are at a very delicate stage. They have undergone one or more unsuccessful treatments, and everything becomes doubts and fears. Approximately half of the couples who did not achieve pregnancy decided to give up. The other half, overcoming all barriers, decided to continue with in vitro fertilisation treatment. Sixty per cent of these couples achieved pregnancy on the first attempt, and 70% between the first and second attempts.
The results of the study show us that approximately 85% of women under the age of 40 achieved pregnancy through artificial insemination or IVF. This is a very high and positive rate that we should all be aware of.
We know that this path can be long. It requires time, patience and difficult decisions. But we also know that it has its ultimate reward.
That is why we inform couples of the overall success rate after several attempts at fertility treatment. Because this information provides peace of mind, helps with decision-making and dispels the idea of giving up, which is probably the worst enemy of couples who want to have children.
