Lydia tells us her story, “I’m a single mum of two princes who fill my life with happiness”
Today we have a new patient testimony for you about assisted reproduction treatment in our Real Stories section of URE Centro Gutenberg. It’s the story of a “happy mum” whose dreams we had the pleasure of helping make come true.
Her name is Lydia and she’s the mother of two precious babies. She’s here to tell us her story for a beautiful reason: to spread awareness about being a single mother by choice.
There is an increasing number of women who decide to embark on the journey of parenthood alone thanks to assisted reproduction techniques. In fact, the number of treatments performed on single females have doubled over the last five years according to the latest data from the Spanish Fertility Society: from 4.4% of all treatments performed in 2016, to 8% in 2020.
At URE Centro Gutenberg we have also seen this increase and we can say that there are many mothers who have trusted us to make their dreams come true, and today they can proudly say that they are single mothers by choice.

Here’s your story:
Tell us how you heard about URE Centro Gutenberg.
I had heard about the Assisted Reproduction Unit of Centro Gutenberg by word of mouth. I have some friends and acquaintances who were able to become parents thanks to you, so you came with very good references.
After your first appointment with us, what made you choose URE Centro Gutenberg to become a mother?
I had my first appointment with you as a result of my operation.
At the age of 36 I noticed a lump in my stomach that ended up being a tumour (Serous Cystadenoma), and when it was removed they also had to remove both of my ovaries.
I felt lost, but thanks to you I found myself again. After that first visit with your clinic, and after my appointment with Doctor Flores, I discovered that my dream of becoming a mum was still possible.
For financial reasons, and also because I was single and couldn’t count on any financial support from a partner, I had to try my luck through the Social Security system. After four years and three in vitro fertilisations -and no positive results- I came back to see you once again.
Explain to future moms what doubts you first had about receiving assisted reproduction treatment
The truth is that I never had any doubts. I always had a goal in mind, and it was to make my dream of becoming a mother come true. And despite the fact that I didn’t have a partner, I never gave up. I wasn’t going to wait to be in a relationship to have what I had dreamed of many times: being a mother.
What type of fertility treatment did the medical team recommend in your case? Artificial Insemination? In Vitro Fertilisation?
Since I don’t have ovaries, my treatment was in vitro fertilisation with donor eggs and sperm, also known as egg donation. I wasn’t lucky the first time around, and for my second cycle I opted for embryo donation, and those embryos stuck with me.
What fears did you have and how did you overcome them? How did you feel during treatment …?
My fear was that I wouldn’t be able to get pregnant since I already had four unsuccessful embryo transfers, and at that point I didn’t feel like I had much support from my friends or family anymore.
I think they thought it wasn’t going to happen for me, and they didn’t want me to keep having a hard time with more negative results.
What advice would you give to other women and couples who are considering fertility treatment?
My advice is to fight for your dreams, and to never give up.
I had it very hard, but thanks to the fact that I never gave up I got pregnant with my twins on my fifth attempt.
They are the best thing I have in my life. I’m a single mum of two princes who fill my life with happiness. For that and for how well you have treated me I would go back and choose you another thousand times. I will forever be grateful for you!
