Gema tells us her story. “When you have your baby in your arms, everything will have been worth it”

Today we come to you from URE Centro Gutenberg with the real‑life story of a patient who is very special to us and who came to our clinic in Algeciras (Spain).
And we say special because of her bravery, for not hiding her fertility issues and for helping others who are in the world of infertility and who feel alone. Because they’re not alone! One in every four couples needs help from assisted reproduction in order to make their dream of becoming parents come true.
Thank you, Gema. Thank you for sharing your story here and for those magical words you said to your doctor at the time: “Thank you for being the key that opened the lock to our dreams”. How beautiful! Here’s your story.
Tell us how you heard about URE Centro Gutenberg
I first heard about Centro Gutenberg by word of mouth – I heard people saying positive things about the clinic.
After your first appointment with us, what made you choose URE Centro Gutenberg in order to become a mother?
I remember my first appointment. I was really nervous. The initial diagnosis wasn’t very favourable but a few days later the doctor called and said to me: “Come in for another appointment. I want to see you again because your case has got me thinking. Don’t worry about the money, we won’t bill the appointment”.
Those words were what made me stay with this clinic. It was just that – the way they treated me so well.
Explain to other moms what questions/doubts you first had about assisted reproduction treatment
I had a lot of questions because I was about to enter into a world I knew nothing about.
One of them was about the timeline. How long would it take to get a positive result? Would treatment be successful? Will I be able to be a mum someday? And what if I get pregnant with twins?
What fertility treatment did the medical team recommend? Artificial insemination? In vitro fertilisation? Egg donation?
From the very start, my doctor, Dr. Claudio Álvarez, believed that ovarian stimulation and scheduled intercourse would be the right fit for me.
What fears did you have, how did you overcome them, how did you feel during treatment…?
My main fear was not being able to become a mother. Every day I thought to myself: and if it doesn’t happen for me? Little by little, as I saw that my body was responding to the treatments, I started to believe that each day I was closer to reaching my dream of becoming a mother.
What advice would you give to other mothers and couples who are considering fertility treatment?
My advice to you is don’t hesitate to ask for help. You’re in the best hands. If it happened for me, then it can also happen for you. Trust in the professionals at Centro Gutenberg. You need to have patience, a lot of patience, even when it’s difficult.
During the process there will be tough times but also good times, but when you have your baby in your arms, I promise you that everything will have been worth it.
I’ll leave you with a quick anecdote about something that happened during treatment. My ovaries weren’t responding to the second‑to‑last treatment, so we adjusted it and I returned to the clinic for my weekly check‑up. I wasn’t expecting any good news but my doctor, who already knew me at this point, said to me: “You’re a woman of little faith!”
And there it was: a beautiful follicle was growing and appeared in the shape of a heart. When I saw it I said… it’s going to be a girl! I remember that the doctor gave me a pregnancy test and said that my Christmas gift was going to be a positive test result.
No one had ever made my dreams come true for Christmas. Today that beautiful follicle’s name is Leila.

Thank you, Gema, for sharing your precious story with us. You have no idea how happy it makes us knowing that your dream came true!
Remember that at our fertility clinic in Spain we periodically share different real‑life stories from patients who have come to our fertility clinic. We don’t share them because we feel like we deserve the praise, but rather to give you the opportunity to hear, first‑hand, what it was like for these couples and single women to go through assisted reproduction treatment.
Have you become a mum or a dad with us and would you like to share your story? Contact us! We’d love to hear from you again and it’d be great to see your story on our blog.
